In the field of new energy vehicles, range is undoubtedly the most expensive and critical specification. It is not only tied to the vehicle's practicality, but is also a core decision-making factor for many consumers when purchasing a car. In order to improve range, automakers need to continuously carry out technological innovation and research and development, such as improving battery materials, battery thermal management technology, lightweight body design, and drag coefficient optimization, all of which require substantial manpower and financial resources. As a rising star among pure electric compact sedans, GAC Aion's AION RT stands out in a highly competitive market with its solid range performance.

Since its launch on November 6, 2024, the Aion RT quickly became a market focal point. In its first month on the market, sales reached 11,811 units, making it the first pure electric sedan to exceed 10,000 units in sales in its launch month. The following month, sales surpassed 16,000 units, and cumulative sales over two months approached 30,000, with such strong sales momentum making it a strong contender for the "first hit of 2025." Behind these impressive results, the standout advantage of "real range" played an indispensable role.

Range strength: able to withstand tests across various road conditions and environments

① Across different road conditions, range remains as steady as a rock

In daily urban commuting scenarios, stop-and-go traffic converts a car's kinetic energy into brake heat, making it a "range killer" for vehicles. But with its impressive energy recovery system and efficient power management strategy, the Aion RT easily handles this challenge. During morning and evening rush hours, frequent braking and starting did not cause any significant drain on the Aion RT's battery. Measured data shows that under congested road conditions, the Aion RT's range achievement rate remains stable above 96%. For example, in a daily commuting road test in a first-tier city, with the vehicle traveling at an average speed of about 20 kilometers per hour and frequent starts and stops, 100 kilometers of actual driving consumed electricity corresponding to only 104 kilometers of range, for a range achievement rate as high as 96.2%, freeing owners from battery anxiety and allowing them to move calmly through the city's streets and alleys.

When switching to highway conditions, the vehicle needs to maintain a relatively high speed, placing higher demands on the battery's continuous output capability. The high-rate battery pack and optimized aerodynamic design of the AION RT ensure low energy consumption during high-speed driving. In a 500-kilometer cross-city highway test, the vehicle maintained a speed of 100-120 kilometers per hour throughout, and by the time it reached its destination, the range achievement rate had reached an astonishing 97%. In other words, the vehicle showed a range of 550 kilometers before departure, and after actually driving 500 kilometers, it still had 33.5 kilometers of remaining range, fully meeting users' long-distance travel needs.

Even when facing complex rural roads, with bumpy surfaces, frequent turns, and some sections requiring low-speed crawling, the Aion RT's range performance is equally outstanding. In a test on mountainous rural roads in a certain area, the vehicle experienced various complex road conditions such as uphill climbs, downhill sections, and sharp turns. After driving 80 kilometers, the range achievement rate remained stable at 95.5%, demonstrating strong adaptability and stability.

② In different regions, range always holds up in real terms

In the cold northern winter, the impact of low temperatures on battery performance is a major challenge faced by pure electric vehicles. However, through an advanced battery thermal management system, the AION RT effectively improves battery performance in low-temperature environments, and is equipped as standard across the lineup with a heat pump air conditioner + seat heating, effectively improving range in the cold winter. In a winter test in Northeast China, with outdoor temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius, the vehicle drove 150 kilometers under such severe cold conditions, and the range achievement rate still exceeded 95%. This means that even in extremely cold weather, the AION RT can provide users with reliable travel assurance, allowing northern car owners to buy with confidence even in winter.

In the hot and humid southern regions, high temperatures and high humidity can also have a certain impact on the battery. With special battery protection and heat dissipation design, the AION RT performed well in summer tests in the south. In Guangzhou's high-temperature and high-humidity summer environment, after prolonged exposure to the sun, the vehicle drove continuously for 200 kilometers, and the range achievement rate remained stable above 96%. Whether on the hot streets of the city or during long-distance high-speed driving, the Aion RT can maintain stable range capability, bringing southern users a reassuring travel experience.

Based on comprehensive measured data from numerous media outlets, the Aion RT's range achievement rate is as high as over 98%, and some media tests even produced range data exceeding 100%. Across various road conditions and regional environments, its range achievement rate has consistently remained above 95%, truly achieving "real range."

③ Long range and fast charging, saying goodbye to range anxiety

One battery charge lasting as long as one tank of fuel, and charging as fast as refueling, is the goal every new energy brand strives for. To this end, the AION RT adopts all-domain silicon carbide + 3C high-rate fast-charging cell technology. The power consumption of the silicon carbide motor is only 11.7kWh (11.9kWh), and combined with a large 68.1-degree battery, the pure electric range reaches 650km. For most family car users, one full charge can meet around half a month of daily commuting. In the commonly used charging range from 30-80%, it takes only 18 minutes and adds more than 325km of range, greatly shortening users' charging wait time and achieving efficiency comparable to an 800V platform without actually being one.

Exterior: big-eyed little Panamera, looks are justice

Today's new energy vehicle designs are beginning to pursue a "faceless" look, with most using squinting split headlights, greatly reducing vehicle recognizability. In contrast, the Aion RT's "Swift

Dragon Eye" styling is three-dimensional and rounded, with higher recognizability, and it looks even more beautiful especially from a 45-degree angle, which is why young people call it the "big-eyed little Panamera."

Viewed from the side, the AION RT's body lines are smooth, drawing on design elements from luxury four-door coupes. The overall styling is elegant and sporty, which also gives it a drag coefficient of only 0.208Cd, reducing resistance during high-speed driving and lowering energy consumption during high-speed range operation.
Intelligence: all-scenario high-level intelligent driving with lidar at the 150,000 yuan class

The AION RT offers a high-level intelligent driving system with lidar that new forces generally provide only at the 200,000-300,000 yuan class, bringing users a safer and more convenient driving experience. This intelligent driving system is based on Momenta's algorithm flywheel and applies an end-to-end large model, enabling nationwide mapless NOA without relying on high-precision maps. In terms of hardware, it adopts RoboSense's 126-line lidar + NVIDIA Orin-X computing platform, coordinating 27 hardware components including dual cameras, surround-view cameras, and millimeter-wave radar, enabling real-time perception of environmental information around the vehicle and precise recognition of obstacles, pedestrians, and other vehicles.

In full urban intelligent driving scenarios, it can achieve straight-line U-turns (180°), rural paths, urban villages, construction surfaces, passage between stone bollards, muddy roads, and avoidance of white obstacles. In high-speed intelligent driving scenarios, it also has no problem performing overtaking and lane changes, entering and exiting ramps, and intelligent avoidance in rain, fog, and late-night environments.

In complex parking scenarios, it can automatically park in narrow spaces, dead-end spaces, and complex spaces across the full range of scenarios, with efficient and smooth movements, and it can back into most spots in one go.

Class-leading large space, meeting family loading needs

In terms of dimensions, the AION RT measures 4865/1875/1520mm in length, width, and height respectively, with a wheelbase of 2775mm. Although positioned as a compact sedan, its dimensions can fully go toe-to-toe with mid-size cars, which also lays a solid foundation for its rear-seat space.

Sitting in the rear seats of the AION RT, its rear legroom and headroom are outstanding. The dual sunroofs are also equipped with electric sunshades. The seat cushions are thickly padded and offer good support, making long rides less tiring. Basically, everywhere the hands touch uses soft-wrapped design, giving passengers a pleasant sense of comfort.

At the same time, its trunk volume reaches 540L. Although it is a traditional three-box sedan, the trunk opening is quite good and can easily fit a child's folding bicycle, meeting the needs of various scenarios such as family travel and shopping.

Thoughtful benefit policies, worry-free car purchasing

At present, purchasing the AION RT comes with a 3,000 yuan insurance subsidy and a complimentary home charging pile (for other policies, please consult your local 4S store). After the introduction of the 2025 national subsidy policy, some areas have already exhausted their national subsidy quotas. Aion has launched a "fallback policy" for areas without local national subsidies. This ensures that consumers in these areas can still enjoy car purchase discounts similar to those in areas with national subsidies when buying the Aion RT. Specifically, in areas without national subsidies, consumers purchasing the Aion RT can make up for the price difference caused by the lack of national subsidies through manufacturer subsidies and other forms, allowing consumers to get the AION RT at an affordable price.

Final thoughts

In the view of the author, the AION RT thoroughly taps into consumer needs. Its core selling points are solid range and fast charging. For consumers who need intelligent driving, it also offers urban high-level intelligent driving with lidar as an option. At the same time, its "big-eyed little Panamera" exterior and class-leading large space further enrich its product strength. Placed in the 120,000-150,000 yuan range, its competitiveness is indeed outstanding, making it a well-deserved killer of the XPeng MONA 03.
